In fact the place is more like a large jewellers shop than a historical site.įascinating and well-conducted tour by a very personable guide named Amelie. There are however many, many opportunities to buy gold jewellery or other artifacts at prices which seem to me to be somewhat higher than normal retail. You do get a chance to stamp a copper medallion in memory of your visit (oh the thrill). This is little more than pouring a hot liquid into a mould and cooling it. The guide then disappears for about 20 minutes to get suited up for the "piece de resistance", the gold nugget pouring. Then you traipse down to a "vault" where the vagaries of an AUS $1 million coin are explained (be still my beating heart). The guide on my tour will never have a career as a stand up comedian and I dread to think what it's like if it rains (bad enough in the heat). This is complete with (obvious) plastic replicas of large nuggets. Firstly you spend nearly half an hour outside by the entrance either standing or sitting on stone steps or a wall while a "guide" tried to tell you about how gold was discovered in WA.
